One of the greatest blessings given by Allah ﷻ to mankind is time, through which we are able to perform good deeds in making our lives as per His commands. Every other blessing comes and goes but the time which has passed will never come again. We can easily count those who were present with us in the past but now they are beneath this earth, their book of deeds is closed. They cannot do good deeds because their time is over. But ours are still available to utilize to its fullest. Our life is measured in years, months and days, and the smallest units of our lives are minutes and seconds which we waste without realizing that these are building blocks that eventually build our whole life span.
Imam Hasan Al Basri رحمةالله has said:
يا ابن آدم إنما أنت أيام كلما ذهب يوم ذهب بعضك
O son of Adam! You are nothing but days
Whenever a day passes, a part of you has gone
Managing time is managing yourself, a step towards making a better version of ourselves by utilizing our given time efficiently. It plays a key role in disciplining our life, our potential and finally disciplining the soul. (Tazkiyyah e nafs)
This resource of 24 hours has been given to everyone universally. Some allocate and utilize these hours productively and reach their highest potential and achieve the desired results, on the other hand, some waste it or do not channelize it wisely which in turn makes them stressed and confused.
We should recognize the importance of time since an entire surah of the Quran stresses its significance in human life (Surah Al Asr).
In this surah, Allah ﷻ says that everyone is at loss except for those who utilized their time wisely in cultivating good deeds.
Rasool Allah ﷺ also taught us to be conscious of time. He has reminded us that life in this world is nothing but short-term. We never know when death has been written for us. We must value time for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ. For our guidance and success, we must never waste time nor misuse it.
